About Phyllis Killam Abell

Phyllis Killam Abell, member of the class of 1950, studied chemistry and served as president of the Association of Women Students at UNH. She was married soon after completing her college education, as was the expectation of the women of her generation. Ten years later, when her marriage fell apart, she wanted to improve her skills that she needed in order to find work. She returned to college and got her masters degree in Family Studies and Child Development. She began teaching and research at various institutions including UNH. She was a strong advocate for women and people of color. She taught Women's Studies courses and served on the UNH Women's Commission. She was co-coordinator of UNH's Race, Culture, and Power program and also helped coordinate the "A Century of Progress: The History of Women at UNH" project that was presented for the first time at UNH Reunion 2000.
