About the Sweetser Family

The majority of this collection contains information on Harold Caswell Sweetser (1897-1988), son of John P. Sweetser of Portsmouth, N.H. He was employed as a Helper General at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in May of 1917 and graduated from the University of New Hampshire in 1918. He enlisted in the Army in August 1918 and was discharged in December of the same year. In April 1918 he was promoted to Copyist Ship Draftsman, then to Chief Engineering Draftsman in 1944, and eventually to Naval Architect in 1950. By 1958, when he retired after forty years service, he was the Supervising Naval Architect. He won “The Plack” for long service at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
