About the May Sarton Papers (1940-1970)
Fifteen letters written by May Sarton to various people between 1940 and 1977 . Six of the letters are to Llewellyn Jones, a former literary editor of the Chicago Evening Post and later editor of the Christian Register, a magazine associated with the Unitarian church in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Another six letters are to Agnes Swift, for many years the librarian at Shady Hill School in Cambridge, where Sarton attended school until the end of ninth grade. An additional two letters are to both Swift and her close friend Alice Thorp, who worked as a secretary at Shady Hill, and the remaining letter is to Anne Longfellow Thorp, Alice’s sister, and an English teacher at Shady Hill who was a lifelong mentor and friend of May’s. She was the model for the protagonist in Sarton’s novel The Magnificent Spinster. Two color photographs of Anne are also included.
