Maggie Buglino '27 Receives 2026 Roland D. Sawyer Scholarship
The University of New Hampshire Library is pleased to announce that Maggie Buglino ‘27, of Titusville, New Jersey, is the recipient of the 2026 Roland D. Sawyer Scholarship, awarded to a graduate or undergraduate student whose research draws on primary sources from the Sawyer Papers held in the Milne Special Collections and University Archives.
The Sawyer Papers offer students and scholars insight into a variety of topics including genealogy, New Hampshire history prior to 1969, and the political and social movements of the late 19th and early 20th century, such as temperance, Christian Socialism, the Socialist Party in the United States, and the Populist Party. Roland Douglas Sawyer was a Protestant minister and Massachusetts state legislator from Kensington, NH, who was involved in many of the important issues of his day, from campaigns against prohibition and corruption to the Sacco and Vanzetti case.
Buglino, who is pursuing a double major in English and history, will receive $1500 in recognition of her creative scholarly engagement with the materials, excellent citation practices, and meaningful research into her chosen topic. “I used the Roland D. Sawyer Papers in the course, HIST 500: Introduction to Historical Thinking, to analyze how people have created or understood ‘good lives,’” she says. “My research allowed me to conceptualize what Sawyer and his fellow Christian socialists thought to be a good life by exploring their lives and activism.”
The result was Buglino’s award-winning paper, “The Joy Above All Joys: Roland D. Sawyer’s Socialism for the Working Class.” She will present her research at the Undergraduate Research Conference in April, and her paper is available through the UNH Scholars Repository.
Buglino plans to pursue archival work in the future. “I am grateful to Professor Lila Knolle for overseeing and guiding my research and to the Milne Special Collections for providing me with the tools to explore local history,” she says.
