About Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Issues at UNH
The struggle for recognition and equality by the gay community on campus began in 1973 with the formation of the Gay Student Organization. Although the Student Organizing Committee recognized the Gay Students Organization as an official student group, its right to exist was challenged by then New Hampshire governor Meldrim Thompson. What followed was a two-year battle, ending at the NH Supreme Court, where the GSO won their case.
Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, students, faculty and staff continued to sponsor programs to support the gay community, educate the public and fight discrimination based on sexual orientation.
In 1992, the President's Commission on the Status of Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) Issues was established as a Task Force; in 2002, then-President Joan Leitzel authorized the commission. Its membership includes gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, transgender and allied university faculty, students, staff and community members who are appointed by the president.
The mission of the GLBT Commission is to facilitate the development of a university community that is equitable and inclusive of all sexual orientations and gender expressions through advocacy, education, assessment, and activism.
The GLBT Commission achieves this mission by monitoring the campus climate for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer faculty, students and staff, reviewing the policies and programs that might affect this community, and advising and assisting the University President, and the Vice President for Community, Equity and Diversity on these issues. The commission also provides education and programs to help encourage an inclusive and equitable climate.
