About Nonny Hogrogian and David Kherdian

Nonny Hogrogian was born in New York City in 1932. After graduating from Hunter College, she studied art with Antonio Frasconi and Hodaka Yoshida. She started her career as a designer of children’s books but soon began illustrating and writing. She twice won the Caldecott Medal for the most distinguished picture book for children, in 1966 for Always Room For One More and in 1972 for One Fine Day.

She married David Kherdian in 1971, poet, author and anthologist. Born in Racine, Wisconsin in 1931, Kherdian graduated from the University of Wisconsin and moved to California where he taught, wrote, and edited Ararat magazine. In 1967, he founded the Giligia Press. Kherdian’s best-known book is The Road From Home, an account of his mother’s childhood in Armenia in the early 1900s.

From 1971 to 1973 Hogrogian and Kherdian lived in Lyme Center, New Hampshire and Kherdian was the official poet-in-the-schools for the state. Their New Hampshire experiences are reflected in Kherdian’s poem “Any Day of Your Life” and Hogrogian’s illustrations for Billy Goat.
