About the Winter Sports at UNH
Organized winter sports began at UNH in 1922, when President Hetzel appointed a committee to form an Outing Club. Before 1925, UNH winter sports competitions—including snow shoe events, both speed and figure skating and ski proficiency, cross-country and jumping—were organized by the Outing Club. Chemistry professor George A. Perley (class of 1908) from Goffstown, New Hampshire, served as faculty advisor to the club and then as the first official coach. The Lake Placid Winter Sports Carnival held on Dec. 31 and Jan 2, 1925 was the first of at which the UNH Winter Sports competed as an official varsity sport.
