Special Collections & Archives Introduces New User Interface

This week, the Milne Special Collections and Archives rolled out use of a new information management software, ArchivesSpace. This open source, browser-based application offers a public interface with more search options and better search capability for researchers.

“The switch to ArchivesSpace will result in our materials becoming more accessible, searchable and discoverable,” says Public Services Coordinator Morgan Wilson. “The interface is very user-friendly, so students, faculty, other community members and the public should find it much easier to search, find, request and use our archival materials.”

Users can search manuscripts and archival materials by keyword, title, creator, subject, descriptive notes or identifier (collection number), as well as by date. Rare books, periodicals, university publications, theses and dissertations held in Special Collections and Archives remain searchable through the library website

Quick links allow you to easily cite material, request an appointment to view materials or download a finding aid directly from your search results. Results are relevant, immediate and intuitive, allowing researchers to explore the holdings with greater depth and accuracy. To learn more about using ArchivesSpace, patrons can consult the library’s research guide or contact library staff

ArchivesSpace is a ubiquitous and powerful tool for both managing and facilitating access to our manuscript collections. I am so excited for patrons to use this new platform to discover interesting materials about the institutional history of our school and the Granite State at large.

The University of New Hampshire Library’s Special Collections supports the University’s teaching and research mission by collecting, preserving and making accessible rare, unique and specialized materials relating to New Hampshire history and culture. The University Archives houses materials that document the communities, programs and decisions of the University. The library’s adoption of ArchivesSpace allows patrons to discover more fully the richness of these allied collections.

“ArchivesSpace represents the library’s dedication to providing innovative services to our patrons to help them further their educational and research goals,” says Special Collections Librarian Elizabeth Slomba. “We are able to do this with the support of our donors and gift funds.”

The Milne Special Collections and Archives maintains approximately 18,000 linear feet of rare books, manuscripts, University records, photographs, sound recordings and other materials. Researchers are invited to make an appointment to use items from the collection in our reading room, located in Dimond Library, Room 101. Schedule an appointment, email us at archives@unh.edu or call (603) 862-2714.
