From 1881 to 1893 he was editor of The Cottage Hearth and The Wellspring magazines and co-editor of Our Sunday Afternoon. Allen's literary focus was primarily on stories for young people. He published over thirty books, including Cleared for Action: a Story of the Spanish-American War of 1898 (E. P. Dutton, 1899). Willis Boyd Allen died at Crawford Notch, N.H., in 1938 at the age of 83.

About the Willis Boyd Allen Scrapbook (1873-1884)

The scrapbook dates from 1873 (it is autographed by Allen "Christmas, 1872"), when Allen was seventeen years old, and ends in December 1884. It principally contains newspaper clippings and ticket stubs, and towards the end, a series of pasted-in clippings from the Harwich Independent entitled "Notes of European Travel." The very last entry is an original sketch of a small girl being undressed, possibly drawn by Allen himself.
