About Alvah W. Sulloway (1915-2006)
Alvah Sulloway was born in Concord, NH on Nov. 25, 1915. He received his secondary education at the prestigious St. Paul’s School, graduating in 1934. He then went on to complete both his undergraduate and law degrees at Harvard College, graduating in 1938 and 1941 respectively. Alvah practiced law until 1960, when he changed careers and became an English teacher at Moses Brown School in Providence, RI. He taught there for ten years, resigning because of a difference in educational philosophy with the new headmaster.
In 1939, Alvah married Alison Green, who was a musician. She and Alvah collaborated on a musical titled Winner Take All. He wrote the book and lyrics, she composed the music. It was performed several times between 1944 and 1955 in various New England community and summer theater venues. Their marriage ended in 1952.
In 1954, Alvah married Susan Stewart (1924-2003), a dancer. After his retirement from teaching, they moved to Kittery Point, ME, where Alvah organized the York Golf and Tennis Club and was active in community affairs. He initiated and won a taxpayer suit against the town of Kittery in protest of the town council’s violation of right-to-know laws.
A year after Sue’s death, he married his third wife, Sally Kruger Goff. He died in 2006.
