About Gloria Berchielli
Gloria Berchielli was a longtime CDSS member, active in the NYC area. She worked for CDSS in the New York office in the early 1980s and was particularly involved with programs at Pinewoods Camp and weekends at Hudson Guild Farm, where, with her customary care and thoughtfulness, she organized the registration process for campers.
Gloria taught in the New York City schools and lived in Brooklyn most of her life. She was a gifted musician and played the recorder, organizing the Westchester Recorder Guild while a teacher in Yonkers. As a result of her dedicated work, it became a model branch of the American Recorder Society.
After her retirement from teaching, Gloria moved to Rossmoor, a retirement community in Jamesburg, New Jersey, where she lived with her lifetime friend, Anne Soernssen. On their way to Egypt for a vacation on October 31, 1999 they were both killed when EgyptAir flight 990 went down off the coast of Nantucket.
About the Gloria Berchielli Photographs
The Gloria Berchielli collection contains photographs of various dance events from May 1952, her second year of involvement with the Country Dance Society, until 1986. The photographs were taken primarily at Pinewoods Camp in Plymouth, Massachusetts, where dance and music sessions are held annually from June through Labor Day.
