About Charles T. Russell
Charles T. Russell was born in 1881. He was the son of Joseph Ballister Russell, a merchant of Boston. Charles spent his winters living in Boston and his summers in Falmouth, Massachusetts. In 1906 he married Louise Rust and they had four children, Charles T. (b. 1907), Henry D. (b. 1910), Joseph (b. 1912), and Louise (b. 1914). Charles died of cancer on July 6, 1961 two months shy of his 80th birthday.
About the Charles T. Russell Journals
The collection contains 34 bound journals spanning the years 1926-1961, though the years 1928 and 1940 are missing, and there are two journals for the year 1934. The journals record the various sporting activities Russell engaged in, such as fishing, hunting, boating and bird watching on trips he made to Canada, North Carolina, Florida and Virginia.
Every fall, Charles and members of his family would take a trip to North Carolina to go grouse hunting. He recorded daily tallies of shots fired and how many grouse he and his family members killed. Charles also kept detailed accounts of summer fishing excursions on Cape Cod.
The journals contain cryptic entries about his daily activities and to-do lists, although the more detailed entries are about his health and his sporting activities. Charles also kept lists of the birds he had seen in Falmouth and Boston, Massachusetts. The journals are mostly written in pencil with very few pen entries.
