About the Clamshell Alliance

The Clamshell Alliance was formed in 1976 in order to protest the construction of a nuclear reactor in Seabrook, New Hampshire. It consisted of a loosely-knit coalition of anti-nuclear groups, mostly from New England, organized around a central office which served to disseminate information between groups and to coordinate group activities. The Alliance organized a number of direct, non-violent actions at Seabrook to voice their concerns between 1976 and the late eighties. The Alliance also organized and participated in other anti-nuclear activities in the state of New Hampshire and other areas.

About the Clamshell Alliance Papers

The Clamshell Alliance Papers consists of materials directly related to the Clamshell Alliance, including correspondence and office records, committee minutes, press releases, financial information, publications, subject files, and materials from individual members who worked for or with the Alliance. It should be noted that the files from Robert Cushing contain information pertaining to the Alliance’s interactions with the courts of New Hampshire. The collection also contains publications and other information from Clamshell-affiliated groups, and files and publications related to other anti-nuclear and left-wing organizations. There are also documents relating to the decommissioning of the Seabrook reactor.

This collection is arranged into five series, with oversized material separated into its own series. Material within series I, which reflects Clamshell Alliance organization material only, and IV, which relates to Seabrook decomissioning, is arranged chronologically. Series II and III, which contain material from Clamshell-affiliated groups and other anti-nuclear organizations, are arranged alphabetically by organization. Box numbering starts over with "1" at the beginning of each series, therefore it is important to note the series number when requesting material from this collection.
