About the Colorado Outward Bound School (COBS)
Outward Bound began in Wales, UK in 1941, opened by German educator Kurt Hahn and his benefactor, the shipping magnate Lawrence Holt. The first Outward Bound School in the U.S. opened in Marble, Colorado in June, 1962. Courses run from the Colorado base drew heavily on wilderness and adventure activities because of their proximity to the Rocky Mountains, the rising popularity of outdoor recreation in the U.S., the base’s primitive conditions, and the background of the staff, many of whom had served in the Army’s famed 10th Mountain Division. The Colorado Outward Bound School continues to operate as of 2019.

Materials contain administrative records, marketing materials, course reports, logistical records, correspondence, development materials, and program evaluations/research studies. Multimedia includes unprocessed films, DVDs, VHS recordings, slides, and photographs.
