Concord New Hampshire Labor Council
Labor Union of Concord New Hampshire and vicinities in Merrimack County. This group first organized in November 1891 for the purpose of organizing a Central Labor Union (CLU) for Concord New Hampshire and the vicinity to represent granite cutters, quarrymen, painters, printers, barbers, carpenters, cigar makers, tool sharpeners, plumbers, boot and shoe workers.
About the Concord New Hampshire Labor Minute Book
A 284 page ledger from 1891 to 1896 with monthly minutes that report the activities of each trade and discussions of involvement with state government and other unions across the state. Several examples of their activities are: in 1892 the CLU supported a bill that raised the leaving age of children to 16 years and raised the minimum age of children that work in factories from 13 to 15 years; in 1895 the grievance committee reported that the Eagle Barber Shop had agreed to give their men 60 hours inplace of 67 hours with good pay and "No Sunday Work"; also in 1896 the CLU resolved "that the Government of the United States should own and operate the railroads within its borders."
