About the UNH Dairy Bar
The UNH Dairy Bar is housed in the historic train station which was built in Lynn, Ma. in 1896 and moved to Durham in 1911. As automobiles began to replace trains as the preferred method of transportation, the Boston & Maine discontinued many of its lightly-patronized passenger trains. All passenger service to Durham stopped in 1967 and the empty train station was sold to UNH for $1. The Department of Animal Science renovated the station to house the dairy bar that formerly operated out of the dairy building (Taylor Hall). It served ice-cream made on campus from milk produced by UNH cows. It also had a limited grill. In 1976, operations of the Dairy Bar became part of the Food Service Management program in the Thompson School of Applied Sciences. Since then it has served as a resturant and ice cream bar. In 2001, the train depot began once again to serve passengers as the Durham stop on Amtrak's Downeaster Line.
About the Dairy Bar Papers
The UNH Dairy Bar Papers consist of historical images, menus, histories, blueprints, a cookbook, and extensive publicity covering the history of the building after its move to New Hampshire.
