About the Durham Cooperative Company
From 1912 to 1930 the Durham Cooperative Company offered its members alternatives in "reducing the cost of living in Durham." Orders were taken each month, at a meeting of the membership, for such items as auto supplies, inner tubes, coal, gas and oil, clothes, shoes, food, magazines and photographic supplies. The position of purchasing agent rotated among members. As cars offered more flexible transportation to centers of commerce and mail-order companies expanded their catalogs, the Coop closed its books. source: Durham, New Hampshire, A History, 1900-1985 (Phoenix Publishing, 1985), 107
