About Friedrich S. Grosshut (1906-1969)

Friedrich Sally Grosshut was born in 1906 in Wiesbaden, Germany. In 1932 he received a Doctor of Law degree from the University of Frankfurt, but his law career came to an abrupt end in 1933 when his Jewish employer, Leo Harry, was forced to leave Wiesbaden. Grosshut himself emigrated to Haifa, Israel, where he worked as a laborer, waiter, and bookstore manager. He was also a volunteer re-education worker in a British camp for German POWs at Fanara, Egypt. Both his parents were killed by the Nazis, his father in 1933 as a result of "protective detention," his mother later in a concentration camp.

In 1948 Grosshut left Haifa for Sweden, where he worked as a journalist, and in 1949 he emigrated to the United States, settling in New Jersey. He held various menial jobs and continued to write until his death. Grosshut's published works include several legal treatises, one a full-length book on the function of emergency laws in a dictatorship, two novels, a number of short stories, a documentation on Else Lasker-Schüler, and many reviews of the works of German emigré authors, published in various journals and newspapers.
