About the Creators
The Goffstown Ledgers were created by three entities: the John Smith Store, the Parker General Store and Dr. Alonzo Carr (1817 Goffstown - 1887 Goffstown). The Parker General Store was located in Parker Station area and owned by William Parker from 1804 until he died in 1839, after which it was managed by his sons John and David Parker until it closed in 1872. Today it houses the Goffstown Historical Society. The John Smith Store was opened in 1810 by Captain John Smith (1770-1853) in the area known as the West Village. It was operational at least until 1868.
About the Goffstown Ledgers
Five ledgers/daybooks are included in this collection, from three separate creators. Each is notable for its mention of the town's Black residents alongside the town's non-Black citizens. Goffstown may have been a stop on the Underground Railroad. A packet of background research is included in the boxes with the materials.
Vol. 1: John Smith Store Ledger (1819-1832). Mentions Cato Walker (1766-1838) and his wife Catherine Owen Walker (married 1818), militia man Prince Johonnot (veteren of the Battle of Bunker Hill), and assorted unnamed family members and relations.
Vol. 2-3: Parker General Store Ledger & Daybook (1850-1851; 1864-1867). Mentions the Johonnet family members Isaac, Emerson, Francis and Abraham.
Vol. 4-5: Dr. Alonzo Carr Ledger & Daybook (1839-1849). Mentions Jason Miller, Emerson Johonnet, Abigail Johonnet, Godfrey Johonnet, John Barnes, Sherborn Freeman, Catherine Walker and a Mr. Mitchell. These volumes are also notable for their records of the births and medical histories of Goffstown residents at that time.
