About Harriet Sophia Coe
Harriet Sophia Coe (1840-1916) was born in Lubec, Maine, married Joseph William Coe (1835-1907) on December 2, 1861 and resided in Durham, New Hampshire. They had five daughters and one son.
About the Harriet Sophia Coe Diaries and Scrapbooks
The collection consists of 17 diaries written between 1897 and 1916 by Harriet Sophia (Churchill) Coe. These diaries contain accounts of domestic activities and the day-to-day life of a Durham family. Harriet Coe mentions trips to Fort Wayne, Indiana, and Brookline, Massachusetts to visit her daughters and briefly refers to other Durham families. Included in the collection are two scrapbooks and a number of photographs. The scrapbooks — probably owned by Harriet Coe’s son-in-law, Daniel Benjamin Ninde, a lawyer from Fort Wayne, IN — contain newspaper clippings, illustrations, and various witness testimonies. The subjects of the newspaper clippings include slavery, abolition, the Nebraska bill, temperance, and nativism.
