About Christine Helwig
Christine Helwig (1913-2009) of Connecticut was an expert on English Country Dance and in particular the dances and music of 17th Century France and England. She helped start several dancing groups including the Country Dancers of Westchester and the New Haven Country Dancers, and was an avid member of many others. She was particularly interested in the work of Andre Lorin (late 1600s) and John Playford (1623-1686/7); and wrote two books and many articles on the people, dances, and historical context of the Lorin and Playford manuscripts. Helwig was a lifetime member of the Country Dance and Song Society (CDSS), and her legacy has been honored with the creation of the Ed and Christine Helwig Fund for dance research and reconstruction.
About the Christine Helwig Papers
Research and correspondence related to the music and dance of 17th century England, France, and North America, particularly the work of Andre Lorin. Studies of specific dances (i.e. Irish Tage, Camptown Races, Valentine), bibliographies, reconstructions, transcriptions, comparisons, and indexes make up the bulk of the material. Some analysis of John Playford, Elias Howe, Raoul Feuillet, Essey, Dezais, and Cantelo are provided. Cantelo’s “American Country Dances” (London, 1785) is included in glass negative form.
