About Levi Bartlett
Levi Bartlett (1793-1885) was a tanner and farmer of Warner, New Hampshire. In the 1830s, Bartlett sold off his tannery and struggled to cultivate his family’s farm. From his experience in reclaiming this nutrient-exhausted land, Bartlett became a proponent of scientific farming and began writing occasional columns for agricultural magazines. He was especially interested in geology and chemistry as it related to agriculture.
About the Levi Bartlett Papers
The first two folders contain eleven autographed letters written by Bartlett and drafts of two letters he wrote to others, dealing primarily with the subject of agriculture. The latter two folders contain the autographed texts of four addresses made by Bartlett. Two deal with agriculture, one with geology, and one with the issue of slavery.
