About Marion James, 1918-2015

Marion James was a native of Durham, NH. The only daughter of renown UNH Chemistry professor Charles "King" James, Marion James obtained her education from UNH and Radcliffe. She joined the faculty of the UNH History department in 1955, where her teaching specialty was the history of ancient Greece and Rome. James became chair of UNH History Department in the 1960s and is believed to be the first woman chair in the College of Liberal Arts. She retired in 1986, but maintained a role in the university both as a member of the University System of New Hampshire Board of Trustees from 1990-1994, and later as board member and president of the University Art Museum.

In 2002, UNH President Joan Lietzel commissioned James to write a history of the University of New Hampshire. Her book, the University of New Hampshire 1955-2002: The Rise of Research, was published in 2010 when James was 92 years old.

During her life, Marion James traveled extensively throughout Europe and Asia. During her travels, she acquired an extensive art collection which she bequeathed to the University Art Museum upon her death in 2015.

About the Marion James Collection, 1876-2011

The Marion James Collection, acquired from her estate shortly after her death in 2015, consists of correspondence, diaries, photographs and documents related to her education and research. It also contains correspondence and photographs belonging to her parents, Charles "King" James, a renown chemist and professor at the University of New Hampshire, and Marion Elizabeth (Templeton) James.
