About Michael McKernan
Michael McKernan is a caller, fiddler, banjo player, and dance historian from Putney, VT. He was a member of the contra dance band Applejack, as well as the Brattleboro Brass Band, and completed many dance/music residencies in area schools. He has published widely on the history of New England contra dance, and organized the Brattleboro Dawn Dances in the late 1970s. McKernan also briefly served on the Ralph Page Dance Legacy Weekend Committee. Other interests include shape note (Sacred Harp) singing, Morris dancing, and rare books.
Many of the well-known names of 1970s New England contra dance are represented: Ralph Sweet, Molly Mason, Jay Unger, April Limber, Pete Colby, Bob McQuillen, Dudley Laufman, the Lamprey River Band, New England Tradition, NEFFA, Champlain Valley Festival, Ralph Page Legacy Weekend, Rod Miller, Randy Miller, Gordan Peery, Duke Miller, Tony Parkes, David Kaynor, Cammie Kaynor, Van Kaynor, and many others.
About the Michael McKernan Collection
The Michael McKernan papers consist of correspondence, posters, newsletters, and promotional material related to the Brattleboro Brass Band, Applejack, and many other events McKernan attended or in which he participated. Many posters reflect the fine calligraphy of David Kaynor, especially those from the Guiding Star Grange in Deerfield, MA.
