About the Nottingham (?) School Register
The register, for a summer school class taught by Hannah C. Wood, is a small mine of information. No town is given, but based on the ages and names of the pupils, it is possible it was from Nottingham, Strafford Co. The book includes a record of attendance, a school register, general remarks by the teacher, as well as directions to the teacher on how to complete the register. It records how many “scholars” attended the class (48, one of them over 16 years of age), which studies were pursued (reading, spelling, arithmetic, geography, grammar, writing, and history), which books were used for this purpose, the methods of instruction and discipline, how much a female teacher was paid per month, exclusive of board ($9.00), how much was appropriated for wages for the school ($58.50), and the condition of the schoolhouse (it had two blackboards and was “rather” pleasantly situated).
