About Newton F. Tolman (1908-1986)

Newton French Tolman (1908-1986) was a contra dance flute player from Nelson, New Hampshire. He learned flute from his uncle as a child and played in the Nelson Town Band. Later he became an invaluable source of knowledge for younger generations during the contra dance revival of the 1960s-1970s. He was a member of many important dance orchestras, including some led by caller Ralph Page. His son Renn Tolman (1943-2014) and nephew Harvey Tolman (b. 1938) have gone on to become important New England musicians in their own right.

Newt Tolman was the author of several books including Quick tunes and good times : a light-hearted guide to jigs, reels, rants, planxtys, and other little-known New England folk music (Dublin, NH: William Bauhan, 1972), and other books about the history and culture of the Monadnock region of New Hampshire.
