The Van Ackeren family papers consist of approximately 50 letters written by Francois Van Ackeren and family to William McLain and family of Brookline, Massachusetts between the years 1917 and 1953. The letters, written in either French or English, fall predominantly during the years 1917-1918 and 1945-1946. Besides family news, the correspondence discusses Francois’ injury and convalescence during the First World War and his family’s difficulties in re-establishing a normal life after the German occupation of Belgium in World War II.
