About Bob Van Antwerp (1920-2005)
“Bob Van Antwerp was one of the early and most important west coast callers. He was part of Bob Osgood’s group of close caller friends and was actively involved in the early development of square dancing and clubs in the Southern California area. He was a recreation director … in Long Beach, Ca. He was one of the founders of [the international square dance organization] CALLERLAB and one of the founding members of the CALLERLAB Caller Coach Accreditation process. He was one of the the most respected of the early leaders in modern western square dancing. […]
“Bob was one of the most respected and active teachers of callers. That [the collection] contains both his teaching outlines and large quantities of philosophical material is not a surprise. […] As was true of most of us who started calling before 1960, he had most of his material written out in a form that could be read as he called or at least easily reviewed as one was calling. Some of us referred to that document as our ‘little black book’. Bob’s wasn’t black but the format was very similar.
“This collection of material provides an extraordinary historical view of the modern western square dance activity during the period leading up to and during the creation of CALLERLAB through the eyes of one of the most influential and observant leaders.”

About the Bob Van Antwerp Papers
“This collection of documents includes three basic types of material. One is [Van Antwerp’s] early notes about CALLERLAB. In particular, there is a large section of itemized actions taken by CALLERLAB in the early years (1971-1985). It is the first instance of what later became the CALLERLAB Policy File. This is a typewritten version of what was later put in a computerized file. [The remainder consists of] both material for caller training and general philosophical documents.”
