About the Browne Family, 1840-1995
George Browne, 1840-1912
Born in Boston, Massachusetts to George and Joanna Browne, George Browne spent much of his adult life taking risks and exploring unfamiliar lands. He served in the Civil War, rising to the rank of first lieutenant, for the 6th Independent Battery of Artillery in the New York State National Guard. Then in 1873, he married Ella (Nellie) Haskell. The couple bore three children, George, John (Jack), and Belmore.
As a broker, importer, and member of the New York Stock Exchange through the 1870s, Browne earned a significant fortune that gave him the means to pursue his interests. In 1883, he and his family relocated to Europe, and while George studied painting and architecture, the Brownes traveled around France, Italy, and Switzerland. They returned to the United States some five years later and settled in the Pacific Northwest. George used his investments to help found the St. Paul and Tacoma Lumber Company, where he also served as secretary and treasurer.
Belmore Browne, 1880-1954
Over the course of his life, Belmore Browne, the youngest son of George and Nellie Browne, claimed many achievements as a mountaineer, artist, and author. He married Agnes Evelyn Sibley in 1913, and the couple had three children, Belmore, Evelyn and George (Belmore died in infancy).
At a young age, Belmore combined his passion for nature with his artwork. While his parents settled around Tacoma, Washington, Belmore and his brothers attended boarding schools in New England, and explored the Pacific Northwest in the summers. At age eighteen, he decided to pursue art as a career. He received formal training at the New York School of Art and the Académie Julian in Paris. He eventually won national competitions, and museums purchased his works, and hired Browne to paint dioramas for their collections.
A skilled outdoor adventurer, Browne joined several expeditions in the unexplored areas of the Pacific Northwest. He climbed Mount Olympus, in Washington State, and made three attempts to ascend Mount McKinley, in 1906, 1910, and 1912, which he recorded in The Conquest of Mount McKinley (first published in 1913). Browne came within 300 yards from reaching the summit until snowstorms forced him to retreat. He put his enthusiasm and expertise of nature into his writings, penning and illustrating Guns and Gunning (1905), a guidebook on hunting and camping; a trilogy of boys’ adventure books; and numerous articles in publications such as Harper’s, Scribner’s, Collier’s, Recreation, and Outing.
In the mid-1920s, Belmore, Agnes, and their two children moved from New York City to Banff, Alberta, Canada. They purchased a log cabin in the middle of the natural landscape, where Belmore immersed himself in his art. By the early 1930s, the Brownes alternated between Alberta in the summers, and the San Francisco Bay area in the winters.
Agnes Evelyn Sibley Browne, 1882-1976
Agnes Evelyn Sibley was born in 1882 to parents Francis and Anna Sibley. She married Belmore Browne in 1913 and had three children, including Evelyn Browne (1915-1994) and George Browne (1918-1958). After her husband's death in 1954, Agnes supported his legacy as an outdoorsman and an artist. She corresponded with Jacqueline Kennedy requesting that one of Belmore's paintings be hung at the White House. Agnes had strong political ties to the Republican party, and received correspondence from Richard and Patricia Nixon. In her later years, she moved to Durham, NH to be close to Evelyn, where she lived until she passed away at 94 years old.
Evelyn Browne, 1915-1994
The oldest offspring of Belmore and Agnes Browne, Evelyn Browne inherited a love for nature that carried over into her career in outdoor education. As a child, she spent the school year studying in Santa Barbara, California, and the summer months camping, hunting, and exploring the Canadian Rockies with her family on horseback and pack mules.
In 1943, after earning a master’s degree in physical education at Columbia University, Browne became an instructor in women’s physical education at the University of New Hampshire. Amongst her many contributions to the university, she established the riding program, coached riflery and basketball, and taught the first courses in outdoor education. She also continued her education, and earned a second master’s degree in history. After she retired in 1981, Browne donated six acres of land on Durham Point and set out to create an outdoor education center for the university. Now known as the Browne Center for Innovative Learning, the facility offers a host of programs and activities on its 103-acre wooded sanctuary.
Barbara King Newman, 1919-1970
Born in New Jersey in 1919, Barbara King Newman came to the University of New Hampshire as professor in as the Department of Physical Education. After her death in 1970, a scholarship was created in her name and is to be given yearly to a Kinesiology student with demonstrated scholarship and service to physical education. Barbara King Newman was a very close personal friend with Evelyn Browne.
George Browne, 1918-1958
From an early age, George Browne, the youngest child of Belmore and Agnes Browne, embraced his father’s interests as his own. He developed a passion for nature, grew into a skilled outdoorsman, and before his untimely death, began to emerge in the art world as a gifted painter particularly for his portrayals of waterfowl and upland game birds. He married Isabel (Tibby) McGregor in 1948, and the couple had two children, Isabel (Busy) and Belmore.
Art served as a vital outlet in George’s education and self-expression. On summer camping excursions with his family, and during winter days in northern California, George spent much of his time sketching. At age fifteen, with the support of his parents, he quit school, began an apprenticeship under his father, and then enrolled in the California School of Fine Arts.
George also inherited from his father an attraction for exploration. In the summer of 1947, after his discharge from the army, he joined an expedition with long-time friend Bradford Washburn and completed what his father failed to achieve – reach the summit of Mount McKinley. One year later, after courting San Francisco-native Tibby, the couple married and moved to Seebe, Alberta.
In the mid-1950s, as George gained a following for his paintings, the couple took their children and moved to Norfolk, Connecticut to live near the hub of the sporting art industry. Browne had sold a handful of paintings before marrying Tibby, but his reputation as an artist began to progress after a New York City art gallery agreed in 1947 to exhibit his work. Through the 1950s, he boasted several one-man shows and sold a couple hundred paintings at art galleries in North America and Canada.
But without warning, on March 14, 1958, George’s life came to a tragic end. At a weekend gathering in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State, an acquaintance unfamiliar with firearms accidentally discharged a bullet from his gun, which hit George in the neck. Within an hour, the forty-year-old had passed away. After a period of bereavement, Tibby remarried to Hugh Robinson. Nevertheless, she and the children remained in close contact with Agnes and Evelyn Browne.
Isabel "Busy" Browne Driscoll, 1951-2017
Isabel "Busy" Browne was the daughter of George and Isabel "Tibby" Browne. After her father's death in 1958 and her mother's remarriage to Hugh Robinson in 1960, "Busy" remained close to her aunt Evelyn and Grandmother Agnes. She married Peter Driscoll in 1973 and they had three children. She died in a car accident at age 66.
Belmore Browne, 1953-2021
Belmore Browne was the son of George and Isabel "Tibby" Browne. After his father's death in 1958 and his mother's remarriage to Hugh Robinson in 1960, Belmore remained close to his Browne family relatives. He married and had one daughter. Belmore passed away from illness in 2021.

About the Browne Family Collection, 1840-1995
The Browne Family Collection consist of vital records, correspondence, manuscripts, diaries, documents, and photographs of the family. The contents were acquired from family members and from the University of New Hampshire. The bulk of the collection is Evelyn Browne's personal correspondence, scholarship, and photographs, her contributions to the University of New Hampshire, and to the town of Durham, NH. The previous collection, UA 17/18 Evelyn Browne papers, 1961-1965, has been integrated with this collection.

Series 5: Evelyn Browne’s work at the University of New Hampshire, 1943-1993
(1.0 cubic foot)Evelyn Browne joined the UNH faculty as an instructor in women's physical education, establishing the University's riding program as well as coaching riflery and basketball. Outdoor education was a lifetime passion, and in 1955, Browne began teaching the first outdoor education courses at UNH. After Browne retired from UNH in 1981, she donated land to the university to be used for the foundation of a UNH center for outdoor education, now known as the Browne Center.

Series 6: Evelyn Browne’s community involvement, 1966-1990
(1.5 cubic foot)Evelyn Browne was an active participant in her community. In 1973, her love of the outdoors led her to become one of the leaders of Save Our Shores, an organization which stopped the plans proposed by shipping magnate, Aristotle Onassis, to build a massive oil refinery on Great Bay just outside of Durham, NH.
