He worked as a farmer and laborer prior to late 1859, when he went to Cambridge, Massachusetts and worked as a brass finisher with the J. J. Walworth Manufacturing Company for a few months. He returned to Swanzey, dividing his time between working at a local pail manufactory and as a farm laborer. In 1862, he married Harriet Lane; a son, George, was born on January 22 1863. Hill enlisted in the 16th N.H. Regiment on September 6, 1862, serving in Louisiana. On April 20, 1863 he was aboard the gunboat Clifton when it did battle with the Confederate gunboat Mary T. Hill was discharged at Concord, N.H. on August 20, 1863. In subsequent years, he became a machinist for manufacturing concerns in Cambridge, Massachusetts, New York City, Newport, R.I., and Haydenville, Mass.
About the David W. Hill Papers
David W. Hill’s diary entries run from January 1858 until January 1863 and primarily reflect Hill’s day-to-day activities as a farmer and laborer, and follow his move to Cambridge, but they include little detail on his work at the Walworth Manufacturing Company. They subsequently document his Civil War experiences and include accounts of pay received and expenditures, references to singing lessons and parties, and some ribald verse. Biographical information and loose ephemera are appended.
