The Department of Physical Education was founded in 1945 as the Department of Physical Education for Women. It became the Department of Physical Education ca. 1963, and merged with the Department of Leisure Management and Tourism in 1990. It is now part of the College of Health and Human Services.

This collection contains the records of the Department of Physical Education, its faculty and committees, majors and minors and the Barbara King Newman Scholarship. Women's physical education from 1945-1962 is well documented.

This collection is mostly open. Several folders in Box 4 are marked "[RESTRICTED]": due to the student essays in these folders, they are closed until 2058.

This collection is housed in the Library Storage Building; access requires 48 hours notice. Please contact the Special Collections staff prior to visiting the library.
