About Howard M. Hanson (1835-1909)

Howard M. Hanson was born in Lebanon, Maine in 1835. A resident of Somersworth, New Hampshire, Hanson joined the Ninth New Hampshire Volunteer Regiment on June 28, 1862. Hanson was mustered in as a commissary sergeant on August 6, 1862. Following the war, Hanson returned to Somersworth where he operated a grocery store until his death in 1909.

About the Howard M. Hanson diary

180 page pocket diary of Howard M. Hanson, commissary sergeant, the Ninth New Hampshire Regiment. Entries run from January 1864 through December 31, 1864. Hanson described his regiment’s transfer from Kentucky to Virginia and its subsequent involvement in the Army of the Potomac’s movement from Bristoe Station to the seige of Petersburg, Virginia. Many entries include descriptions of Hanson’s commissary activities. Accompanied by two photographs, one of Hanson himself with three colleagues: Newell T. Dutton, Sylvester J. Hill, and Charles E. Rugg, the other of Lt. Col. J.W. Babbett. There is a also a transcription of the diary entries from April 28-June 1, 1864.
