About the Memorial Union Building Fund
The first serious consideration beyond the conversational stage of raising funds for a student union occured at the February 21, 1943 meeting of the Board of Directors of the Alumni Association. William Call, class of 1913, chairman of the Alumni Fund Committee, proposed making an immediate start on plans aimed at securing funds for a building that would provide suitable facilities for the extra-curricular activites, both social and educational, of students and faculty. The building would also serve as a memorial dedicated to alumni who were serving or who had served in the armed forces. At a meeting of the Alumni Association Board in February of 1945, President Harold Stoke offered the services of the University in planning and organizing the Fund drive on a larger scale and in soliciting and collecting funds. The Board voted to accept the University's help and elected an executive committee for an expanded drive to obtain a minimum of $250,000.
