About Smith Hall
Smith Hall is the oldest residence hall on the University of New Hampshire campus. Built in 1908 with money from the bequest of Mrs. Hamilton Smith, it fulfilled the long-felt need for a dormitory for women. All women students who did not live at home were required to live in the dorm, which had room for 32 residents. Over the decades, the building has been expanded and renovated several times, but it remains the smallest dorm on campus.
Because of its small size and central location, it was selected in 1983 to become a coed, International theme dorm with goals of helping students adapt to UNH and make the transition to American culture easier. The dorm has about 100 residents; one third of whom are from abroad.
As part of the International Living Theme, Smith Hall residents participate in many projects that aim to inform the community about foreign cultures. Two of the largest projects are the International Food Luncheon, which occurs in the Fall semester, and the International Fiesta, which occurs in the Spring semester. The luncheon provides an opportunity to sample and make international cuisine. The Fiesta is the largest event that Smith hosts and includes live international entertainment and vendors as well as an international cafe and student vendors.
About the Smith Hall Files
This collection contains various materials and photos pertaining to Smith Hall residents, hall directors, and Smith Hall activities and events. It also includes welcome papers and goodbye letters as part of Smith Hall yearbooks. There is planning information and advertisements/fliers from the ISA International Festivals and Dinner and Dance Events and the Smith Hall International Fiestas.
