About the Writing Across the Curriculum Program
In 1995, the Academic Senate passed a motion that established the University of New Hampshire's current writing requirement (with implementation beginning in 1996 and course approval in 1998). This requirement rests on the belief that academic and disciplinary literacy represent the cornerstone of a university curriculum. Writing assignments that support course and curricular objectives are strongly encouraged in all courses, whether they are designated Writing Intensive or not. However, in order to ensure that students have a coherent and intensive set of experiences with writing at the college level, all undergraduate students must take at least four courses which are defined as Writing Intensive (WI) in order to graduate.
Writing in the major will take many forms, from senior theses and projects to major special courses. The University Writing Center provides not only individual assistance to students but also consultation to faculty in the implemention of "writing across the curriculum."
About the Writing Across the Curriculum files
This collection includes files involving the Writing Across the Curriculum Program, including General Education materials, writing guide materials and requirements, workshops, correspondence, and proposals. It also has Writing Intensive Course Progress Reports, annual reports, and documents on the Christensen Project. The Faculty Contacts includes the names of those within the University who have had workshops, consultations, or meetings about their courses and course materials. Please note that the final box of the collection, "Student Papers," is confidential and protected under the Buckley Amendment.
