About Clement Moran (1884-1938)

Clement Moran (1884-1938) was born in Fallsbury, Ohio, and attended Defiance College before taking a job as a physics professor at the New Hampshire College (later the University of New Hampshire). His skill in photography led him to begin photographing the campus in 1914, eventually producing a well-indexed collection of approximately 14,000 images.

Professor Moran taught physics from 1916-1940 but his avocation was photography. He qualified himself as a "commercial amateur." Small in stature and always impeccably dressed, Professor Moran taught physics in the morning and photographed in the afternoons. He captured all aspects of college life from formal head and shoulder portraits to recreational activities such as sports and festivals. His darkroom was located in DeMeritt Hall, where he sold images to students for a nominal fee and taught a course in photography. In the 1930s Moran started filming with 16 mm camera various campus activities which have since been converted to VHS.

About the Clement Moran Collection (1914-1938)

The Clement Moran collection is a compilation of glass plates, 4.5 x 6.5 negatives, and original prints made by Moran in the DeMeritt Hall darkroom of approximately 2,600 different images capturing campus life in Durham, NH. Included are Moran’s meticulously kept handwritten logbooks which were critical in identifying and dating many of the images included in the collection along with corresponding typed ledgers with more detailed information such as identification of group photographs.

1000+ of these images have been digitized and can be viewed in the Library's Digital Repository.
