About the University of New Hampshire Library
When the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts opened for classes in the fall of 1893, the library collection of 3,500 books and 2,000 pamphlets was housed in a room on the first floor of Thompson Hall. An adjoining reading room was set aside for students. Fortunately, Durham had a large Social Library, which was incorporated that year as the Durham Library Association and which provided public library services to the college community as well as to town residents.
In 1906, Durham and the college agreed to combine library resources, an agreement that lasted 90 years. The state, the Carnegie Corporation, and a bequest from Hamilton Smith, a wealthy Durham resident, provided funding for a building. Durham turned over its library to the college and agreed to pay at least $25 a year for the purchase of books. The Hamilton Smith Library was dedicated on June 3, 1907.
The college became the University of New Hampshire in 1923, and the library grew to meet the need of increasing numbers of students and a rapidly expanding curriculum. Despite the additions of wings and a small stack area for books, by 1950, the collection had clearly outgrown its quarters. In 1955, the legislature issued a bond to build a new library.
Three years later the new University Library - a boxy, modernist building - opened at the edge of the ravine overlooking College Brook and Thompson Hall. In 1967, the University Trustees named the building in honor of Ezekiel W. Dimond, the institution's first professor. Asked how many students the building could accommodate, then-University Librarian Thelma Brackett replied, "As many as will come." Come they did, and within a few years the University was using classrooms in other buildings as overflow study areas. By this time, the library's collection had grown to more than half a million volumes. Branch libraries hold working collections in physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, engineering and computer sciences.
An addition, completed in 1969, doubled its capacity and was expected to provide adequate space for the next ten years. In order to provide conditions favorable to the preservation of library materials and the comfort of library patrons, the building was completely air conditioned. The interior decor was done in high-seventies style, with brown, gold, and orange-stripped carpeting on floors and bright colors on its columns. Twenty-eight years later, enrollment had nearly doubled to 12,500 students; the library collection had soared to a million volumes; and rapid advances in computer technology had changed the way the library functioned. To meet the needs of the thousands of students, faculty, staff, alumni and state residents who relied on the library daily, the university embarked on a $19 million expansion and renovation project.
The building, designed by Cambridge architect Graham Gund and Associates, increased interior space by one quarter and enables the libary to reorganize its services and collections to serve patrons more effictively. It combines the formal elegance of the three 19th century grand reading rooms with soaring ceilings with the technology of the 21st century.

(28 boxes)This series contains the records of the various individuals who have held the position of University Librarian and provides an overview of the Library's growth and development. The University Librarian is the chief representative and executive officer of the Library with general administrative authority over all Library affairs and is responsible for promoting the library's basic mission to support the teaching, research and student informational need of the University. He/she has major responsibility for initiating and implementing policy and for planning for library development in consultation with Library faculty and appropriate teaching faculty-student committees. Specific duties include providing leadership in strengthening the Library and its programs, overseeing the Library budget, fundraising and donor relations, encouraging and maintaining participation in resource-sharing activities with other University units and with other educational and professional organizations, and participating in University planning and development. As an officer of the University Administration, the Librarian reports to the Provost for Academic Affairs. The University Librarian position was retitled Dean of the University Libraries in 2006. Such diversity of purpose is represented in the University Librarian records themselves, which contain correspondence, subject files, and other documentation relating to topics as varied as collection development, finances, fundraising, organizational and staff matters, and library policy.

Series 2: Annual Reports
(5 boxes)The two Annual Reports subseries consist of reports written by the University Librarian and submitted to the President of UNH. The reports include the accomplishments and highlights of the year as well as the future needs of the library, including building, staff, and collection issues. They also include statistics and lists of gifts received by the library. Beginning in 1940, the Librarian requested an annual report from the head librarian in each of the departments within the library as well as the branch libraries. These department reports were used to compile the annual Library report. Subseries 2A is comprised of these reports, while Subseries 2B is made up of the annual reports of various library departments.

Series 3: Minutes
(5 boxes)This series contains the minutes of the committees that were instrumental in the development of library policies and procedures. They includes committees composed of members from the university community at large and those composed of members of the library staff. Series 3 is arranged by four subseries: The Minutes of the Library Committee; Library Staff Minutes; Library Faculty Minutes; and the Library Department Heads Minutes.
Subseries 3A: Library Minutes
(2 boxes)In 1915, the Board of Trustees appointed a Library Committee of the Faculty giving them, in consultation with the President, the authority to "draw up regulations and to put into operation any changes they may deem necessary in order more fully to safeguard the books and to increase the efficiency of the library." It remained a standing committee of the University Administration until 1977, when it became a standing committee of the Academic Senate. There is a gap in the series between 1968 and 1982.

Series 6: Gift Files, 1931-1996
(6 boxes)The gift files consists of the lists of book titles with the names of the donors that were compiled for the library annual reports. These files are followed with correspondence and gift acknowledgments to individuals who made donations to the library. They are arranged alphabetically by the donor's last name. Donations made by UNH faculty are prefaced with "Professor gift" and donations made to a specific library collection are prefaced with "Special Gifts." Though many of the gift acknowledgments refer to printed works, gifts of items such as manuscripts, personal papers, and archival material are also documented in these records. The records also include pecuniary donations to specific memorial gift funds, which are arranged alphabetically by the name of the gift fund.

Series 7: Building and Renovations, 1937-1996
(3 boxes)This series consists of the librarian's files on the renovations and expansions of the University's library buildings. Built in 1907, the Hamilton Smith Library underwent a major expansion in 1937/38 with the addition of wings. In 1940, a small stack area was added. Plans for further expansion of the building were abandoned around 1952 in favor of building a new library, which opened in 1958. (In 1967 the University Trustees named the building in honor of Ezekiel W. Dimond, the institution's first professor.) This building has been expanded with two major renovations, the first in 1969 and the most recent in 1996.

Series 8: Durham Public Library, 1893-1997
(2 boxes)In 1906, the town of Durham and the New Hampshire College of Agriculture and the Mechanic Arts agreed to combine library resources "in perpetuity." Durham turned over its library to the college and agreed to pay at least $25 a year for the purchase of books. Each year, the librarian submitted a report of the public library activities to the town of Durham. By law, they were also required to send an annual Public Library Report to the New Hampshire State Library. In 1996, by mutual agreement, the Durham Public Library was separated from the University Library. This series contains the annual reports of the Durham Public Library as well as some correspondence concerning the public side of the library.

Series 9: Book Reviews for Publication and Radio Broadcast, 1938-1945
(4 boxes)In November 1938, the UNH Extension Service asked the library to furnish weekly book reviews for a 15 minute program to be broadcast over the radio (WHEB). Shortly after the radio program was inaugurated, the book reviews were submitted to local newspapers for publication as a weekly column called "Cream of the New Books." These book reviews were written by Shirley Barker '34, author and library assistant at the NH State Library. In 1943-44, some of the book reviews were adapted from a script provided by the Book of the Month Club. In 1944, a weekly radio program devoted to children's books was begun. Jennie Lindquist '29, author and UNH Reference Librarian wrote and narrated those reviews. This series is arranged chronologically by broadcast date, except for the years 1943-44 where an attempt had been made to sort them alphabetically by author.

Series 10: Summer Library Programs, 1920-1974
(2 boxes)The annual Summer Library Institute, first held in 1920, was a cooperative program between the UNH Summer School and the NH State Library Commission. The SLI provided training for town and school librarians as well as other library workers who were unable to attend a regular accredited library school. The program was omitted in 1943. A similar program on Public Library Techniques began in 1955. No formal academic credit was awarded, but participants received a certificate of achievement upon competition of the four-year cycle of courses. This program was phased out after 1975.
