    Edwin Scheier (1910-2008) and Mary Goldsmith (1908-2007) met and married 1937. They became travelling puppeteers, designing and building their own puppets, and in 1938 the Scheiers worked with the Federal Art Project in Norris, Tennessee where they learned about ceramics. In 1941, they began work at the University of New Hampshire teaching ceramics. After they retired from UNH in 1960, the Scheiers lived in Mexico for ten years before finally settling in Arizona.     Dr. Fred Engelhardt was chosen as president of UNH on December 1, 1936, assuming office the following April. He served as president until his death on February 3, 1944.     Each fall the UNH sophomore class would create the "Freshman Rules" for the new students that year. The rules usually pertained to where the freshman could walk and what they could wear. The rules would not apply if the Freshmen were successful in taking down every poster by 7:00 pm. This was known as the Poster Fight.     Gordon A. Haaland joined the UNH faculty as instructor of psychology in 1965 and later served as chair of the psychology department. He was serving as vice president for academic affairs before he became interim president and then president of the University in 1984. Gordon Haaland resigned to become president of Gettysburg College in 1990. The presidential papers of Gordon A. Haaland include materials on the Women's Commision, accreditation of the Social Work Dept., and the 1984 Commencement.

    Though graduate study at UNH dates back to 1899, the Graduate School was not formally organized until 1928. The Graduate Club was formed by graduate students attending summer school courses, largely secondary school teachers and administrators seeking advanced degrees. They met once a week during July and concluded with a banquet in the first week of August. This series contains the minutes and financial records for the Graduate Club for the years 1929-1935.

    The recreational area known as Lewis Fields at the University of New Hampshire was begun in December of 1933 and finished in September of 1936. It was named for President Edward M. Lewis. The facility was built using funds from the various federal relief agencies set up to help alleviate unemployment during the Great Depression of the 1930's.

    Professor Clarence W. Scott worked for the University for 54 years. He served as first librarian of the college, instuctor and professor of English, 1878-1886, and professor of history and political science, 1879-1930. A short time before his death, Dr. Scott had undertaken the writing of a history of the university. The manuscript was never finished. This series contains three drafts of the portion of the history he completed before he died.
